In the upper level of the recently restored monument of Central Food Market Agora Modiano in Thessaloniki, the open bartending concept Hive2O recreates the path of a bee: seeks, collects and transforms the market’s raw materials into finished goods.

The vast majority of the hive is comb – a series of interlocking hexagonal cells made of wax. It is in these hexagons that brood is raised and honey and pollen are stored.

For that reason, the Tayer series by Behindbars Agency was the most suitable bar furniture to act as the central focal point of the project. Designed by Monica Berg and Alex Kratena, the Tayer station is a fully customizable and flexible working space, thanks to its hexagon shaped system. It is completely adaptable to the unique working preferences of its operators and able to meet the ever changing needs of the dynamic venue. Over this island bar station we placed a central lighting system, made by a sequence of RGBw linear led tubes that shape a wave.

The study was based on the principles of space chic design, a futuristic interior design style that draws inspiration from space, science fiction, and technology. It incorporates sleek, metallic finishes, geometric shapes, and minimalistic decor elements. Furniture and accessories were made of shiny silver or chrome combined with fluorescent blue, magenda and orange, and space-themed decor items were used to complete the look.

Due to building restrictions no colored wall paint was used and everything was designed as a movable object. In the morning the bar functions as a cafe, extending the market’s lounge deck. At night, when the market is closed, the central RGB lighting feature paints the space with color, enhancing the party mood of the visitors.
